Il libro di Dede Korkut

curated by Federico De Renzi
foreword by Isa Habibbeyli

Homer’s tales of ancient Turkish epics, included by UNESCO in the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

THE BOOK: Khans, princes and warriors populate the heroic epic of the Oghuz, the Turkic tribes who settled in Central Asia between the Middle Ages and the modern age, from which the Seljuks and Ottomans descended. The twelve prose stories collected in this destan narrate their deeds against the “infidels” for affirmation in the lands of the Caucasus and have their roots in oral tradition in the thirteenth century. Holding the tales together is the figure of Dede Korkut, the wise bard who goes through the vicissitudes of several generations, gives advice and dictates moral principles.
A milestone in the literary culture of Turkish-speaking countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Turkmenistan, a fundamental work that immerses the reader in a fairytale atmosphere, in a constant game of parallels with Western myths.
