A meeting of Serbian exiles in Thessaloniki, during the First World War: while they make music, drink, discuss, prepare to fight back against the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the tragedy of a couple of traitor-lovers unfolds. Surprising one-act drama of patriotic inspiration and Balkan setting, full of learned references to Serbian history and culture, forgotten work by the author of Canzone del Piave<\/em>.<\/p>\n

THE BOOK: <\/strong>The famous Neapolitan lyricist Giovanni Gaeta set this, which is probably his only prose work, in the context of the Serbian exile during the First World War. The Serbian army had been forced by the Habsburg attack to retreat through Albania, then reaching the Macedonian front (April 1916 – September 1918), from where the assault towards the North was launched, for the liberation of the Motherland. Precisely in that period the author, in contact with Trieste environments, must have picked up the epic-literary suggestions already made his own by D’Annunzio (see Ode to the Serbian Nation<\/em>) and elements of Serbian culture also of an ethno-musical nature, to translate them into this short theatrical piece published in Naples in 1918. With the chance discovery of this text by the translator in the 1990s, and with its bilingual publication, to allow the public to also become aware of it of the Serbo-Croatian language, an extraordinary document full of meaning is returned to the history of the two literatures and to the history of the international Risorgimento brotherhood. The Mazzini and Garibaldi ideal, shared by the author, was based on solidarity between peoples and, as regards Italians and Yugoslavs, as Sandro Pertini will point out, brotherhood was established not only in the hard years of the First World War, but at the height of the Italian Risorgimento, when Giuseppe Mazzini published his Slavic Letters<\/em> in 1857 and predicted with extreme lucidity that the movement for independence of the Southern Slavs would be the most important, after the Italian, for the future Europe.<\/p>\n

Giovanni Ermete Gaeta <\/strong>(Napoli 1884-1961), of humble origins, he showed musical and poetic talent at a very young age.
In his long career he wrote the lyrics for over 2000 songs, for many of which he was also the author of the melody. The lyrics of famous Neapolitan songs such as A Mergellina<\/em>, Santa Lucia luntana<\/em>, Canzone napolitana<\/em>, Io ‘na guitar e ‘a luna<\/em>, even Tammurriata nera<\/em> (1945, made even more famous by the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare), as well as the lyrics of several songs with a patriotic theme including the very famous Canzone del Piave <\/em>(1918). From 1904 onwards he used the pseudonym E.A. for all his works. Mario, with whom he became famous but never rich, since due to the needs of treating his wife’s illness he soon had to sell the rights to his main works.<\/p>\n

Un ritrovo di esuli serbi a Salonicco, durante la Prima guerra mondiale: mentre si fa musica, si beve, si discute, ci si prepara alla riscossa contro l\u2019occupazione austro-ungarica, si svolge la tragedia di una coppia di amanti-traditori. Sorprendente dramma in un atto di ispirazione patriottica e ambientazione balcanica, ricco di dotti riferimenti alla storia e cultura serba, opera dimenticata dell\u2019autore della Canzone del Piave<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

IL LIBRO: <\/strong>Il celebre paroliere napoletano Giovanni Gaeta ambient\u00f2 questa, che \u00e8 probabilmente la sua unica opera in prosa, nel contesto dell\u2019esilio dei serbi durante la Prima guerra mondiale. L\u2019esercito serbo era stato costretto dall\u2019attacco asburgico a ritirarsi attraverso l\u2019Albania, raggiungendo poi il fronte macedone (aprile 1916 \u2013 settembre 1918), da dove fu lanciato l\u2019assalto verso Nord, per la liberazione della Madrepatria. Proprio in quel periodo l\u2019autore, a contatto con ambienti triestini, deve avere raccolto le suggestioni epico-letterarie gi\u00e0 fatte proprie da D\u2019Annunzio (cfr. Ode alla Nazione Serba<\/em>) ed elementi della cultura della Serbia anche di carattere etno-musicale, per tradurli in questa breve pi\u00e8ce teatrale pubblicata a Napoli nel 1918. Con il ritrovamento casuale di questo testo, da parte della traduttrice negli anni Novanta, e con la sua pubblicazione bilingue, per consentirne la conoscenza anche al pubblico di lingua serbocroata, si restituisce alla storia delle due letterature e alla Storia della fratellanza risorgimentale internazionale un documento straordinario e pieno di significati. L\u2019ideale mazziniano e garibaldino, condiviso dall\u2019autore, era fondato sulla solidariet\u00e0 tra i popoli e, per quanto riguarda italiani e jugoslavi, come far\u00e0 notare Sandro Pertini, la fratellanza si era instaurata non soltanto negli anni duri della Prima guerra mondiale, ma nel pieno del Risorgimento italiano, quando Giuseppe Mazzini nel 1857 pubblic\u00f2 le sue Lettere slave<\/em> e\u00a0 previde con estrema lucidit\u00e0 che il moto d\u2019indipendenza degli slavi del Sud sarebbe stato il pi\u00f9 importante, dopo l\u2019italiano, per l\u2019Europa futura.<\/p>\r\n

Giovanni Ermete Gaeta <\/strong>(Napoli 1884-1961), di umili origini, mostr\u00f2 giovanissimo talento musicale e poetico.
Nella sua lunga carriera scrisse i testi di oltre 2000 canzoni, per molte delle quali fu anche autore della melodia. \u00c8 suo il testo di famose canzoni napoletane come A Mergellina<\/em>, Santa Lucia luntana<\/em>, Canzone napulitana<\/em>, Io \u2018na chitarra e \u2018a luna<\/em>, financo Tammurriata nera<\/em> (1945, resa ancor pi\u00f9 celebre dalla Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare), nonch\u00e9 il testo di diverse canzoni di tema patriottico tra cui la celeberrima Canzone del Piave<\/em> (1918). Dal 1904 in poi us\u00f2 per tutte le sue opere lo pseudonimo di E.A.
